New Year Players Resolute in Planning For Future Football Career

The Glenn Hoddle Academy Club players are leaving snow covered Britain behind as they return to sunnier climes in Spain to resume their training and development programmes as they continue to improve their chances of a return to professional football.

As Britain braces for the longest cold snap in recent times, the players will be snow and frost free as they train twice daily on the dedicated grass pitches at the academy base at the Montecastillo Resort in Jerez, Southern Spain.

Temperatures in Jerez are considerably higher than the UK and this is one of the main reasons the academy is based in Spain, where the climate guarantees that training can take place 365 days a year, with no snow or ice interruption. Temperatures this week are anticipated to reach highs of 16 degrees.

The players will be straight back into their training routines, having maintained their fitness levels while back in the UK thanks to the invitation by a number of senior clubs in England, for players to attend their training sessions during the Christmas break.

This new year will also see the academy players being joined by new international trialists, with players from clubs across Europe joining them for a chance to earn a full-time scholarship to the academy.

Glenn Hoddle said: “The players are returning to Spain at just the right time, especially with fixtures, let alone outdoor training, being cancelled in England due to the weather. One of the reasons I chose to base the academy in Jerez is because of the climate and these decisions really do pay dividends when the weather is bad back home.

“The lads will go straight back into their development programmes having maintained their fitness levels thanks to a number of clubs back in the UK and we are grateful to them for their support. I am sure a number of these clubs will be keen to visit us in Spain if the cold snap continues.

“As we embark on a new year we will begin to showcase our current squad of players and at the same time keep an eye open for new talent. The academy regularly receives players throughout the year for either trials or development and January is no different. We have a number of new faces joining us and hoping to impress and at the same time we are continuing to offer our successful elite player development opportunities for clubs and international federations”.
